Ruggero Leoncavallo

Send in the Clowns (Pagliacci)

/ 2011 / New Zealand Opera schools tour

Derek Hill (Casio) and Matthew Landreth (Tony) square off while Amelia Berry (Sonata) sets up in the background, in New Zealand Opera's touring schools production of 'Send in the Clowns' directed by Steven Anthony Whiting. Shot at Belmont Primary School, Auckland, New Zealand, July 2011

Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, in a fresh english translation for children aged 10 to 14 years. It was performed at over a dozen schools around the Auckland region in an ingenious set designed to be packed into any performance space as part of the production.

Wittily blending drama and reality, Send in the Clowns introduced kids to opera right in their own back yards, and introduced the themes of love, jealousy, and violence in ways that were suitable to the younger age-group, but retained the power and passion of the original.

"The opera was just fantastic and full of drama... there was so much action and lots of romance and arguing that dragged me in"

"It was probably my favourite opera because I could understand it and it had humour."

"Quite funny but also tragic"  The audience at Belmont Primary School!
