The Austrian/Kiwi stage director was born and brought up in Vienna, where his frequent visits to the 'Haus am Ring' inspired the operatic journey that has taken him halfway around the world and back.

He has directed opera productions for the Bregenzer Festspiele, New Zealand Opera, the Berlin Opera Academy and Vocal Forum Graz, as well as for his own company Opera/Fabula. 

 

He has revived productions for David McVicar at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, for Stefan Herheim at Madrid's Teatro Real and Det Kongelige Theater, Copenhagen, for Simon Stone at the Wiener Staatsoper, and for Calixto Bieito at the Teatro Sao Carlo, Lisbon. ​After many years as a freelancer Steven is now a staff director at Opernhaus Zürich.
